DNEG Details Angry Birds 3 Animation, Red Redesign

VFX supervisor Patrick Harboun presented the film at View Conference in Turin and said DNEG's system automated character effects on about 75% of shots late in production.

Patrick Harboun, the VFX supervisor on The Angry Birds Movie 3, presented the film's animation work at View Conference in Turin on Friday, detailing a redesigned Red and a new character-effects system built by DNEG Animation, according to Variety.

DNEG Animation handled the film after Sony Pictures Animation produced the first two movies. Red returns with slightly softer plumage and firmer, more toy-like eyes and beak surfaces, Harboun said.

The studio developed a performance-effects system that automated character-effects work on about 75% of the film's shots by the later stages of production, up from around 25% early on. Harboun's presentation traced that process to DNEG's earlier work on The Garfield Movie.

New characters and a new city

The film introduces more than 20 new characters, among them Glider, June, Olly and the pet spider Fuzzy. Olly's glasses double as animated eyes through a technique nicknamed Pancake Eyes.

The story also adds Pigtropolis, a city for the pigs, to the existing Bird Island. The opening sequence was switched from night to day late in production.

The Angry Birds Movie 3 opens on December 23. Harboun recommended that audiences see the 3D version.
