Hui said that when she entered the industry in the 1970s she had five women bosses who supported her career, and that she plans to discuss these five women in her masterclass at the festival.
She also noted that about 10-20 women directors are now actively working in the Hong Kong film industry, compared with two or three when she started.
A career spanning five decades
Hui began her career in the 1970s at Hong Kong broadcaster TVB, then an incubator for the city's new wave of filmmakers. Her early trilogy about Vietnamese boat people includes Below The Lion Rock, The Story Of Woo Viet and Boat People.
Her filmography also includes The Romance Of Book And Sword, Eighteen Springs, All About Love, A Simple Life, which won best actress in Venice, and The Golden Era, which won best director at Taiwan's Golden Horse. In 2023, her most recent work, Elegies, a documentary about Hong Kong poetry, opened the Hong Kong International Film Festival and was nominated for the Golden Horse Awards.
