Avengers #1 Shows Mephisto's Deals Unraveling, Including Spider-Man's

Marvel Comics' Avengers #1 by Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto depicts angel-like beings reversing mortal deals with Mephisto, including Spider-Man's.

Marvel Comics' new Avengers #1 by Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto shows Mephisto's old agreements coming undone worldwide, according to Screen Rant. In the issue, angel-like beings are reversing the mortals' deals with Mephisto, and Spider-Man's bargain is among them.

Avengers #1 introduces Paige Howley, a girl whose parents made an unknown bargain on her behalf. A sentient book given to Paige leads her to Spider-Man and tells him he once made his own deal with the devil.

The storyline follows earlier developments in the Avengers: Armageddon crossover. In Chip Zdarsky's Captain America tie-in issues, Doctor Doom, with Steve Rogers' help, overthrew Mephisto's rule and declared all his contracts null and void. In Avengers: Armageddon #5, Tony Stark used a device formerly owned by Doctor Doom to see a future in which Mephisto appeared to kill Spider-Man.

In 2007's One More Day, Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson agreed to Mephisto's deal to save Aunt May's life in exchange for erasing their marriage and memories.
