From memoir to film
In 2024, Anh Duong published his memoir Dear Da-Lê: A Father's Memoir of the Vietnam War and the Iranian Revolution, which recounts his childhood near Huế, Vietnam, escaping the Vietnam War, living as a refugee during the 1970s revolution in Iran, and arriving in Canada in 1980. Ashley Duong and her father went on an artist residency together, and the decision to make Ba's Book took at least a couple of years before she was ready. It also took a couple of years before Duong decided to appear on screen in the film. Duong and her father recently watched the Canadian hybrid film Blue Heron together.
