BBC Studios seeks California tax credit for The Next Pro season 2

The company wants to move Dancing with the Stars: The Next Pro from Australia to Los Angeles and has entered phase two of the tax-credit application.

BBC Studios has filed paperwork for a California tax credit as it looks to move production of Dancing with the Stars: The Next Pro to California for a potential second season, according to deadline.com. The company is in phase two of the application process.

The Next Pro has not yet been officially renewed for a second season. BBC Studios hopes to receive the credit before budgeting a second season and before holding talks with ABC.

The approval allocation date for the next round of funding is believed to be November 16, though full results may take longer.

The first season was shot in Australia, largely at the Thomas Dixon Centre in Brisbane. Dancing with the Stars premiered in 2005 and has filmed all 35 seasons in Los Angeles.

If the application succeeds, The Next Pro would be only the second unscripted show to receive the credit, after Netflix's Schooled!. The California Film & Television Jobs Act, Assembly Bill 1138, was signed in 2025 by Governor Gavin Newsom and expanded tax credits to unscripted shows.
