BBC Studios Labels to Bid for Doctor Who Tender
BBC Studios scripted boss Jamie Hall says at least one, possibly two, of its labels will apply to produce Doctor Who, as the tender process opens.
At least one BBC Studios label will apply for the tender to become the next producer of Doctor Who, and possibly two, according to the company's scripted boss Jamie Hall.
Hall said he would be happy for more than one BBC Studios label to enter the race, adding that the show should sit within the BBC and that the whole group should reap the rewards of it.
He also said he would like a revamped Doctor Who to return to the core offering of the Matt Smith and David Tennant era.
The tender was published a fortnight ago and calls for a new vision for the show, with a premiere targeted for 2028-29. The Disney+ co-production deal for Doctor Who has ended.
Two seasons of the series were made by Sony-owned Bad Wolf, starring Ncuti Gatwa. Before Bad Wolf, BBC Studios' in-house drama label produced the show. BBC Studios CEO Tom Fussell recently said the company would be applying for the tender "with gusto," while Line of Duty producer World Productions, owned by ITV Studios, has previously indicated interest, according to boss Simon Heath.
