Marvel Confirms Betsy Braddock's New Codename Is Butterfly
Betsy Braddock will take the codename Butterfly in Maximum X-Men #1, released on December 2, 2026, alongside Bishop and Colossus.
Marvel has officially confirmed that Betsy Braddock will use the codename Butterfly, according to screenrant.com. The change comes in Maximum X-Men #1, which releases on December 2, 2026.
Maximum X-Men #1 is written by Christopher Yost with art by Tony S. Daniel, Mark Morales, Leonardo Paciarotti and Clayton Cowles. Betsy is a member of the Maximum X-Men team alongside Bishop, Colossus, Iceman, Firestar and Justice.
The new name refers to a glowing pink butterfly form that appears around Betsy's face when she uses her telepathy and astral projection.
Betsy previously used the codenames Psylocke and Captain Britain. She took the Captain Britain name from her twin brother Brian Braddock, and retired from the role at the end of the Krakoan Era.
In the 1980s, Betsy swapped bodies with Kwannon. In 2018, the two characters permanently swapped back, with Kwannon keeping the Psylocke name. Some fans have criticized the new codename, arguing that it is too slight for her powers and that she should remain Psylocke.
In a recent blog post, X-Men section editor Tom Brevoort appeared to reveal the Butterfly name ahead of the official announcement.
