Big Tech Gets the Hollywood Treatment This Fall With Four New Films

Aaron Sorkin's The Social Reckoning, Alex Gibney's Musk, Nathan Fielder's You Can See Everything and Luca Guadagnino's Artificial all arrive in theaters this season.

Hollywood is releasing a slate of Big Tech-focused films this fall, with four titles centered on figures from the technology industry now confirmed for theatrical runs. According to CNET, the lineup spans scripted drama and documentary, and includes projects from Aaron Sorkin, Alex Gibney, Nathan Fielder and Luca Guadagnino.

The Social Reckoning, directed and written by Aaron Sorkin, hits theaters on October 9. Jeremy Strong plays Mark Zuckerberg in the film, which draws inspiration from the 2021 Wall Street Journal article The Facebook Files, based on leaked documents from former Facebook engineer Frances Haugen.

Musk, a documentary by Alex Gibney running about 4 hours, hits theaters on October 16 and will stream on HBO Max next year. Also released on October 16 is You Can See Everything, a nearly 3-hour documentary by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim.

Artificial, directed by Luca Guadagnino and starring Ike Barinholtz as Musk, premieres in theaters on Christmas Day. Amazon MGM Studios originally was set to distribute the film but stepped away after signing a multiyear partnership with OpenAI, and Neon picked up the film.

Earlier Tech Stories on Screen

The new films follow earlier Hollywood treatments of tech and startup figures. The Social Network, about Facebook, was released in 2010. Gibney's 2019 documentary The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley covered Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos, after Holmes was indicted in June 2018 for fraud and conspiracy; The Dropout, a 2022 Hulu series starring Amanda Seyfried, also told Holmes's story. Sam Altman was fired by OpenAI and rehired five days later in 2023.
