Bill Hader cites Kurosawa's Cure as influence on horror debut They Know

Hader said his first horror film as director draws on Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Cure and Serpent's Path and has drawn comparisons to Rosemary's Baby.

Bill Hader has named Kiyoshi Kurosawa's films Cure and Serpent's Path as influences on They Know, his first horror film as a director, in a podcast interview reported by bloody-disgusting.com.

Hader described They Know as more of a psychological horror film and said a few people who have seen it compared it to Rosemary's Baby.

He added that the film is hard to categorize, and that this may be why it has proven difficult to find a distributor. That comparison refers to Roman Polanski's 1968 film of the same name.

They Know stars Hader as a divorced father who suspects his ex-wife is secretly dating a mysterious man who is influencing their children. Linda Cardellini, Lilou Lang and Lorelei Olivia Mote also appear.

The film does not yet have a release date. Hader previously starred as Richie Tozer in IT Chapter Two and created and starred in the series Barry.

Earlier work

Kiyoshi Kurosawa directed Cure in 1997, and the thriller is widely regarded as one of the strongest Japanese psychological thrillers. Hader has not said when They Know might reach audiences.
