Black Bear opens Wicker in 1,400 theaters, eyes $6-8 million
Black Bear is self-releasing the Sundance title nationwide this weekend after its trailer drew more than 402 million combined views.
Black Bear is releasing Wicker in 1,400 theaters this weekend, with the medieval-period romance expected to open to between $6 million and $8 million, according to IndieWire.
The film stars Olivia Colman as a spinster fishmonger who commissions a wicker husband, played by Alexander Skarsgard. Black Bear acquired North American distribution rights after seeing how the film played at Sundance, having joined the project at the script stage as international sales agent alongside financiers Topic and Tango.
The marketing push has leaned heavily on the trailer: it generated 80.3 million views in its first two weeks across Black Bear's owned channels, 70.5 million of them organic. Trailer-related reactions and user-generated content on TikTok added 322 million views, for a combined total above 402 million.
Wicker sold out instantly at Middleburg and played a selection of fall festivals, skipping Toronto. Colman is in the awards conversation for Actress, as are the film's hair and makeup team.
A mixed run for Black Bear's own releases
In the past year, Black Bear gave a full theatrical release to Christy starring Sydney Sweeney, which grossed just under $2 million domestic on a $15-million budget. Earlier this year, former Black Bear executive Ben Kramer left the company as part of a staff and executive team reshuffle.
