Brolin Praises Abrams' Whalefall Shoot Resilience
Josh Brolin says he does not know how Austin Abrams endured the two-month shoot of Whalefall, as director Brian Duffield calls both actors the best alive.
Josh Brolin said he does not know how Austin Abrams endured the intense two-month filming period of Whalefall, according to comments Brolin made to Love Horror. The actor discussed the shoot alongside director and producer Brian Duffield, who also praised both performers.
Brolin described the claustrophobia in the film as emotional, saying it came from conscious tension and the chemistry he and Abrams built together rather than from the physical setting alone.
Duffield called Brolin and Abrams the best actors alive and said his job was to not get in their way. He added that Abrams spent roughly 40 to 50 days screaming and crying inside the whale without complaining.
Release plans
Whalefall is scheduled for theatrical release in the United States on October 16, 2026, from 20th Century Studios. The film is based on Daniel Kraus' 2023 novel.
Brolin and Abrams first worked together in the 2025 film Weapons, directed by Zach Cregger, in which Brolin plays Archer Graff and Abrams plays James.
