CAA's Roeg Sutherland Says It's Too Soon to Gauge Netflix Fallout

Speaking at Rome's MIA Market, the CAA media finance co-head said mergers are an opportunity for film financiers and predicted new U.S. distributors could emerge.

Roeg Sutherland, co-head of CAA's media finance department and international film group, said on Tuesday at the MIA Market in Rome that it is too soon to predict the fallout from the recent firings at Netflix, according to Variety.

Sutherland told the market that mergers and consolidation represent an opportunity for film financiers. He added that David Ellison has guaranteed a certain number of movies will be made per year following the Paramount Skydance–Warner Bros. Discovery deal.

He also said the U.S. market could see new distributors and financiers emerge within the next few months, and cited Netflix's Spanish-language film La Bola Negra as drawing audiences to theaters.

What Preceded the Firings

Netflix cut about 1,000 employees, roughly 6% of its workforce, including chief content officer Bela Bajaria and head of film Dan Lin, whose firing was announced on Monday. Paramount Skydance acquired Warner Bros. Discovery to form Skydance Corp.

The 12th edition of Rome's MIA Market runs from Oct. 19 to 23.
