CANEX Creations Debuts African Global Hub at TIFF
CANEX Creations Inc. launched the African Global Hub at TIFF, featuring a screening of Muganga: The One Who Treats and panels on financing African stories.
CANEX Creations Inc. hosted the inaugural African Global Hub at the Toronto International Film Festival, bringing together filmmakers, financiers, and industry leaders for a series of screenings, panels, and works-in-progress showcases.
The hub featured an industry screening of Muganga: The One Who Treats, followed by a talk with Nobel Peace Prize winner Denis Mukwege, alongside actors David Oyelowo and Danai Gurira. The film was released in France and Belgium last year.
A panel titled 'Closing the Gap' tackled the challenges of financing and distributing African stories, a central theme of the hub. The event also spotlighted six African works-in-progress, including The Black Book 2: Old Scores, the sequel to Editi Effiong's 2023 breakout action thriller The Black Book.
Osahon Akpata, who attended the event, has been a regular presence on the international film circuit. In September, he attended French President Macron's Lumière Summit in the South of France. Last year, he attended TIFF with Idris Elba's short film Dust to Dreams, one of CCInc's first investments.
Another film with ties to the hub's mission, Clarissa, directed by Arie and Chuko Esiri, was selected for Directors' Fortnight at Cannes and also screened at TIFF. The African Global Hub marks a significant step in CANEX Creations' efforts to elevate African cinema on the global stage.
