Catherine Hardwicke has been tapped to direct the female-led Western 'American River' for Bronte Studios, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Production is set to begin in Australia in the second quarter of 2027.
Eric Esau wrote the screenplay. The film is produced by Blake Northfield, Michelle Krumm and Shaun Goodman in association with MEW Films. Casting is underway, with Lisa Beach and Sarah Katzman leading the ensemble search, billed as The Search.
Set in 1848 at the dawn of the Gold Rush in California, 'American River' follows four women from vastly different backgrounds.
