Chomet denies generative AI use in Dior short Night in Color
Director Sylvain Chomet and producer Aton Soumache say the six-minute film was drawn by hand, with automated interpolation used only for some in-between frames.
Sylvain Chomet has denied that generative AI was used to create his animated Dior short “Christian Dior's Night in Color”. The director and producer Aton Soumache said the six-minute film was made with traditional 2D animation, with characters, backgrounds and key poses drawn by artists.
The pair acknowledged that an automated interpolation system was used for some in-between frames, but said generative AI was not used for the artwork. The denials were reported by Variety.
Soumache said the film took seven months to make and employed about 20 people, including six animators. Chomet said the accusations followed online claims of visual glitches, such as a character with six fingers.
Robert Pattinson narrates the film. Louis Garrel voices Christian Dior and Camille Cottin plays Marlene Dietrich, while Rihanna voices Dior's lucky star, Josh O'Connor voices a talking chair and LaKeith Stanfield plays a Hollywood director.
Dior positioned “Night in Color” to launch its 2026 holiday season, and the short draws on the earliest ideas behind Jonathan Anderson's Cruise 2027 collection.
