Clayface Actor Tom Rhys Harries Details Practical Makeup Effects

Tom Rhys Harries says makeup for his Clayface transformation initially took four hours, later cut to about two, with real scissors used in one scene.

Tom Rhys Harries, who plays protagonist Matt Hagen in DC Studios' film Clayface, has revealed behind-the-scenes details of the practical makeup effects used to transform his character into the villain, according to cinematoday.jp.

Harries said the melting face effects were shot using practical makeup as much as possible. Applying the makeup initially took up to four hours, a process later reduced to about two hours.

One mask-like makeup piece had lace fabric placed around the eyes with hair threaded through it, allowing artists to pull strings behind the head so the eyes would snap open.

In the trailer scene where Matt tries to cut his own eyelid with scissors, Harries used real scissors on the prosthetic face.

Clayface is scheduled for release on October 30, 2026. According to background reported by cinematoday.jp, the film is described as DC Studios' first R-rated film in the new DC Universe, rated R15+ in Japan, and is billed as the studio's first attempt at a psychological thriller.
