Coen Brothers Discuss Minneapolis-Set Film at Lumière

Joel and Ethan Coen told a Lyon audience they have talked about a hometown project, with no plot decided.

Joel and Ethan Coen said at Lyon's Lumière Film Festival that they have discussed making a new film set in Minneapolis, their hometown. No plot or title has been settled for the project.

Ethan Coen said the brothers have not discussed plot or narrative for the Minneapolis idea, but want to return there partly because of crew members they miss. He also said one of the Minneapolis stories had a main part intended for an actor who has since died, which makes them unsure it will work.

Joel Coen said there are a couple of other stories they have thought about that would take place in Minneapolis, and they will see whether these ideas develop enough to become their next film. He said the idea was raised after Frances McDormand playfully urged them on stage to complete an unofficial trilogy begun by Fargo and A Serious Man.

The brothers received a career tribute at the festival. In 1996 they shot Fargo in Minneapolis, and in 2009 they shot A Serious Man there.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, released by Netflix, was their last joint film. Since then Joel Coen directed The Tragedy of Macbeth, while Ethan Coen made Drive-Away Dolls and Honey Don't!, both co-written with Tricia Cooke. According to Variety, the brothers said they have written many scripts that were never produced.
