Coen Brothers Plan First Joint Film Since 2018
Joel and Ethan Coen told AFP they intend to direct another movie together, with Joel saying the reunion should come soon.
Joel and Ethan Coen are planning to make another film together, the brothers told the news agency AFP. Joel Coen said the reunion should happen in the near future, adding that they are getting old.
Joel Coen said the pair have a number of projects in what they call their library, along with ideas they never got around to writing scripts for, so they do not yet know which one they will make. He also ruled out a television series, saying its structure is not how their brains think about stories.
Ethan Coen said the two have never been drawn to fantasy, science fiction, horror or comic book movies, according to joblo.com.
The brothers have not directed a film together since The Ballad of Buster Scruggs in 2018. Since then, Joel Coen wrote and directed The Tragedy of Macbeth and the upcoming Jack of Spades, while Ethan Coen wrote and directed Drive-Away Dolls and Honey Don't!.
Ethan Coen said last year that the split followed exhaustion after The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, and that there was never a decision to make movies separately. He also said that during the COVID lockdown he and Tricia made a documentary from archival footage, which got him interested in filmmaking again.
Their four decades of collaboration produced Fargo, The Big Lebowski and No Country for Old Men. There had been rumblings that the pair were working on a horror movie.
