Dafoe: Werwulf avoids traditional werewolf tropes

Willem Dafoe said Robert Eggers' Werwulf does not lean into the normal tropes of traditional werewolf stories, in an interview with JustWatch. Dafoe, who stars in the film, said he has seen it and likes it a great deal, while avoiding spoilers.

He described the film as dark, unnerving, beautiful and powerful, and said it is not a traditional horror.

Werwulf stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe and Lily-Rose Depp. It is directed by Robert Eggers, who wrote the script with Sjón, according to Bleeding Cool.

Earlier plans for the film

In early 2025 it was reported that Eggers was co-writing and directing the original feature. According to Eggers, Werwulf is a medieval werewolf film whose script uses Middle English historically accurate to the period, and he called it the darkest thing he has ever written.

Werwulf is scheduled for release on December 25, 2025.
