Dark Matter Creator Explains Season 2 Finale Cliffhanger
Blake Crouch says Leighton's death and Daniela and Charlie's stranding were planned from the start; Apple TV has not renewed the series for season 3.
Blake Crouch, creator and showrunner of Dark Matter, explained the closing moments of the season 2 finale, "No Quiet Life," in remarks reported by screenrant.com. The episode ended with Leighton Vance, played by Dayo Okeniyi, killed by another version of himself named Oluko, who then escaped to another reality without using the chemical compound that other characters rely on to travel between worlds.
Crouch said the two pivotal moments of the finale — Leighton's death and the stranding of Daniela Dessen and Charlie, played by Jennifer Connelly and Oakes Fegley — were planned from the start of the season. Daniela and Charlie were left in a mysterious location after Jason, played by Joel Edgerton, shut down the Box before they could return.
According to Crouch, Oluko transcended the need for the drug by mastering meditation and control of his thoughts, placing himself in the corridor in a super-positional state. He also confirmed that Daniela and Charlie are not back in the world they left.
Apple TV has not yet renewed Dark Matter for a third season. Season 1, released before the second, adapted the full story of Crouch's 2016 novel, while season 2 moved beyond the book.
