Del Toro: BioShock Talks Were 'Disastrous' Calls

Guillermo del Toro says his talks about directing a BioShock movie were among the most disastrous calls he's ever had, and he won't adapt a game again.

Guillermo del Toro has confirmed that he took a couple of calls about directing a BioShock movie, and he did not enjoy them. In an interview with IGN, the filmmaker described those conversations as some of the most disastrous calls he has ever had.

Del Toro went further, saying he would not want to adapt a video game in the future. The comments close the door on a project that fans have long hoped he might take on.

BioShock, the 2007 shooter, has been seen as a natural fit for a film adaptation for nearly as long as the game has existed. The first attempt came shortly after release, with Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski attached, but it was canceled over budget concerns and his desire for an R-rating.

More recently, Netflix announced a BioShock film in 2022, to be directed by Francis Lawrence from a script by Michael Green. Del Toro's own history with games includes the projects Insane and Silent Hills, neither of which was released.

Polygon reported del Toro's remarks, which add another chapter to a long and difficult road toward bringing BioShock to the screen.
