On the HBO Max chart, Doctor Sleep placed above titles including Mother Mary at No. 2, Evil Dead Burn at No. 4, Silent Hill at No. 5 and a film listed at No. 6 in the outlet's ranking.

From King's sequel novel to the screen

Mike Flanagan directed Doctor Sleep, which adapts King's 2013 novel, a sequel to The Shining. Ewan McGregor plays Danny Torrance, with Rebecca Ferguson as Rose the Hat, Kyliegh Curran as Abra and Carl Lumbly as Dick Hallorann. The film was released in 2019 and earned 79% from critics and 89% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, while underperforming at the box office.

Flanagan had previously directed the 2017 adaptation of King's Gerald's Game and later made the 2024 film The Life of Chuck and Prime Video's Carrie miniseries, which debuted at No. 1 on the Nielsen streaming chart with nearly 1.3 billion minutes viewed in its first five days. Stanley Kubrick's 1980 adaptation of The Shining was disowned by King.
