The project has been in the works since 2020, and the directing duo are already thinking beyond this first adventure. Crawford and Mercado have begun discussing sequel plans for Forgotten Island, suggesting the filmmakers see more story to tell.
The pair previously collaborated on The Croods: A New Age and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. For Forgotten Island, they are blending 2D drawn elements and stickers onto 3D models, a visual approach that mixes hand-crafted texture with modern animation.
