Duffield Says Whale's Heartbeat Is Brolin's Own
The director told Variety at the Los Angeles premiere that the sound was taken from a recording of Josh Brolin's real heartbeat.
Brian Duffield, director of the survival thriller The Man Who Fell Into the Whale, said the sound of the whale's heartbeat in the film is a recording of Josh Brolin's own heart. He revealed this to Variety at the film's Los Angeles premiere on October 13, 2026.
Brolin plays Milt, the father of the film's main character, Jay Gardiner, who is played by Austin Abrams.
Duffield also said the whale's face was given scars matching Milt's, so that viewers would feel a connection between the father and the animal.
The film is based on the novel by Daniel Kraus. It opened simultaneously in Japan and the United States on October 16, 2026.
