The Durban FilmMart returns for its 17th edition, running from Oct. 9 to 12 with the theme "Shifting Worlds, Turning Toward Ourselves." The theme was inspired by a quote from Senegalese filmmaker Ousmane Sembène.
The event opens with a screening of Ben'Imana, directed by Rwandan filmmaker Marie-Clémentine Dusabejambo. The film won the Cannes Caméra d'Or and the FIPRESCI prize, and was pitched at DFM two years ago.
Across the four days, the programme includes panel discussions, masterclasses, one-on-one meetings and mentorship sessions. The Think Tank strand features a closed-door session on film distribution in Africa, while sessions on equitable co-production are organized with EAVE.
The Ladima Foundation will launch an initiative aimed at greater gender equity at African film festivals. South Africa's 25% cash rebate, meanwhile, faces ongoing uncertainty, with representatives of the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition expected to attend.
