Ebenezer promo team opens real Venmo account for Scrooge

The account invites the public to send money requests to the Ebenezer film's character; two Variety staffers reported errors, which a source attributed to high demand.

The promotional team behind the film Ebenezer has created a real Venmo profile for the character Ebenezer Scrooge, inviting the public to send money requests to venmo.com/u/EBENEZERmovie, according to Variety.

The film's official X account posted a link promoting the account. When two Variety staffers tried to request money, they received an error message saying the transaction could not be completed.

A source close to the promotion said the Venmo account has been working and that the error was caused by a temporary jam from a high volume of requests. The account's public feed shows payments made to Scrooge by users.

Ebenezer is directed by Ti West and stars Johnny Depp in the title role. It is based on Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol, with a screenplay by Nathaniel Halpern, and is set to reach theaters on Nov. 13.
