Fruitcakes: Dawn of Drag Trailer Debuts Ahead of Tallinn World Premiere

The Hollywood Reporter unveiled a first trailer for Vesa Kuosmanen's documentary, which screens in Doc@PÖFF competition at the 30th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival.

The documentary Fruitcakes: Dawn of Drag will hold its world premiere at the 30th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF) in Estonia, screening on Saturday in the festival's Doc@PÖFF International Competition programme. The Hollywood Reporter premiered a trailer for the film ahead of the event.

Vesa Kuosmanen directed, wrote and co-edited the documentary, editing alongside Jussi Sandhu, with Mikko Kelloniemi serving as cinematographer. Rise and Shine has boarded the film and is handling world sales.

The film follows the revival of Happy Gays, Finland's first drag show, by a new generation of drag artists drawing on the archive of Jolanda, a retired archivist and best friend of Mummo.

Happy Gays was Finland's first drag show and drew large audiences in the late 1970s. In 1988, Mummo, one of the first openly gay men in Finland and a Happy Gays performer, was killed in his home in Helsinki. More than 30 years after his death, Jolanda opened his personal archive for the film.

Kuosmanen's route to the project came a few years ago, after Finland won the ice hockey world championship, when he heard that friends had been beaten up by fans because they looked different.
