Ghoulies Lawsuit Settled; Reboot Awaits Financing

Jefery Levy says the Ghoulies reboot has a script, and production will start once the legal issue is resolved and funding is in place.

The lawsuit over the Ghoulies franchise has been settled, and co-creator Jefery Levy said work on a planned reboot can move forward once financing is secured. Levy confirmed the settlement in a statement, according to joblo.com.

Court records cited in the report show a settlement conference held by video on October 2, 2026, before Magistrate Judge Margo A. Rocconi. Defense counsel filed a Notice of Settlement on October 5, and District Judge Fernando M. Olguin issued an order dismissing the action on October 6.

Levy said the reboot, referred to as "Ghoulies 2027," already has a script but could not get financing while the legal issue was open. He said production will begin once that issue is settled.

The dispute dates to late 2025, when screenwriter Theo Lemasters filed a lawsuit against Levy. In 2024, Levy and original Ghoulies writer-director Luca Bercovici announced they had reclaimed domestic rights to the franchise and were planning a new trilogy, a book series and merchandise.

The original Ghoulies was released in 1985, followed by Ghoulies II in 1987, Ghoulies Go to College in 1991 and Ghoulies IV in 1994. In 2024, actor Michael Des Barres, who played Malcolm Graves in the original film, suggested on social media that he might be asked to reprise the role.
