Grey's Anatomy Spinoff to Film in Albuquerque, Delayed to 2027-28

ABC's West Texas-set Grey's Anatomy spinoff moves production to New Mexico after its California tax credit application was rejected twice.

ABC's planned Grey's Anatomy spinoff set in West Texas will film in Albuquerque, New Mexico, instead of California, according to Deadline. The premiere has been pushed from midseason 2027 to the 2027-28 season.

The series, created by Shonda Rhimes with showrunner Meg Marinis, is in pre-production in Albuquerque. It is described as an edgy drama about a team at a rural West Texas medical center.

Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers, Meg Marinis and Ellen Pompeo serve as executive producers. It marks the first time a Grey's Anatomy franchise series has left California in its 23-year history.

Over the summer, ABC applied for California tax credits for the spinoff and was denied for not providing enough jobs for the state. In the fall, the network applied again; that second application led to postponing prep, locking down stage space and losing below-the-line talent.

The move comes as California officials address production incentives. On October 29, Beers testified at an Assembly Committee hearing in North Hollywood about the state's film and TV tax credit system. On Monday, Governor Gavin Newsom proposed raising California's film and TV tax credit program to $1 billion a year. On Tuesday, Los Angeles elected Nithya Raman as mayor; she promised a Film Czar in the mayor's office and a review of municipal filming costs.
