HBO Puts Sarah Snook-Led 'The Birds' Limited Series Into Development

The series, inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's film and Daphne du Maurier's novella, is set in present-day Alaska with Snook as Myra Massey.

HBO has taken the Sarah Snook-led limited series The Birds into development, according to Deadline. Universal Global Television serves as co-studio on the project with HBO.

Snook plays Myra Massey, a new female protagonist in the present-day Alaska-set reimagining. The series is inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's film and Daphne du Maurier's novella.

Tom Spezialy wrote the pilot and executive produces with Snook, David Heyman, Danny Samit and Jennifer Gabler Rawlings. Heyman and Samit executive produce via Heyday Television, while Gabler Rawlings executive produces from Omni Artists.

Deadline reported in May that the pilot is set in Alaska with a murder mystery at its center, and Universal Global Television took the project out this past summer. It had been in development at UGT and predecessor UIS for more than a year.

Earlier attempts to revisit the title

In 2007, a feature remake of The Birds was announced with Naomi Watts attached to star and Martin Campbell to direct, and it never came to fruition. A BBC series version was announced in 2017, written by Conor McPherson, and it did not come to fruition either. Universal Pictures produced the 1963 feature film and owns the title rights alongside the Du Maurier Estate.

Snook won a 2023 Emmy for her role as Shiv Roy on HBO's Succession. She starred in UGT's Peacock limited series All Her Fault and won a Tony Award last year for The Picture of Dorian Gray and a 2025 AACTA Best Actress Award for Memoir of a Snail. Spezialy shared in the 2020 Outstanding Limited Series Emmy for HBO's Watchmen, and Heyman executive produces HBO's upcoming Harry Potter series.
