Imprint Releases All-Region Blu-ray of 'The Honorary Consul'
Australian label Imprint has issued 'The Honorary Consul' on all-region Blu-ray as part of its 'Directed by John Mackenzie' boxed set, released on October 16, 2026.
The Australian label Imprint has released an all-region Blu-ray of 'The Honorary Consul' as part of its 'Directed by John Mackenzie' boxed set, according to IndieWire. The release date was October 16, 2026. The set also includes John Mackenzie's 'The Long Good Friday', 'The Fourth Protocol' and another film.
'The Honorary Consul' was directed by John Mackenzie. Richard Gere starred in the film, with Michael Caine playing Charley Fortnum and Elpidia Carrillo playing Clara. The film is based on Graham Greene's 1973 novel of the same name.
In 1983, Richard Gere was one of cinema's most prominent leading men, following roles in 'Looking for Mr. Goodbar', 'Days of Heaven', 'American Gigolo' and 'An Officer and a Gentleman'. 'An Officer and a Gentleman' was outgrossed in 1982 only by 'E.T.' and 'Tootsie'.
Paramount retitled 'The Honorary Consul' as 'Beyond the Limit' for U.S. audiences and marketed it with a poster echoing 'Breathless'. The film failed at the box office and drew criticism, including from author Graham Greene, who disliked Gere's casting.
Beyond the initial VHS pressing, there had never been a U.S. physical media release of the film. In the United Kingdom, the film did not come out until 2019. John Mackenzie is best known for his 1981 feature 'The Long Good Friday'.
