Indonesia Drafts Revised Film Law as Jakarta Courts Netflix

The BPI is working with the Ministry of Culture on a revised Film Law while Jakarta hosts four Netflix productions through its Filming in Jakarta service.

Indonesia's Film Agency (BPI) is helping the Ministry of Culture draft a revised Film Law, and a first draft has taken shape since the Cannes film market, according to Variety. The agency's chair, Fauzan Zidni, is leading that work.

Jakarta is pushing in parallel to become a regional production centre. Vice Governor Rano Karno said Netflix is now producing four titles in the city through Filming in Jakarta, the one-stop service for producers. Netflix will also help develop local film talent under a memorandum of understanding tied to the first Jakarta Film Summit.

The city has cut certain location fees by 50% and introduced a 50% tax concession on cinema admissions for qualifying Indonesian films. Governor Pramono Anung has set the goal of making Jakarta a film hub on the scale of Busan.

Financing talks at the summit

The Jakarta Film Summit is bringing OJK, the Ministry of Creative Economy, DJKI, banks and the Indonesian Appraisers Association together to agree on a standard method for valuing intellectual property.

The Jakarta Film Commission and Filming in Jakarta launched in June 2025. Since then, production companies from Malaysia and India have come to the city to shoot films and series. Local productions took roughly 67% of Indonesia's box office last year, according to the article.
