Gunn: DC Studios Does Not Accept Spec Scripts

James Gunn said DC Studios only takes pitches through official channels, citing Mike Flanagan's Clayface as the example of how the process works.

James Gunn, co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios, said the studio does not accept spec scripts based on its intellectual property, according to comingsoon.net. Gunn made the statement in a post on Threads on October 13, 2026.

Gunn said he personally does not read scripts or take pitches until they reach a very late stage. He explained that DC Studios only takes pitches through official channels before commencing a draft.

Gunn cited Clayface as an example of that process. Mike Flanagan pitched an idea that DC Studios bought, and the studio paid him to write it. Clayface, the R-rated body-horror project directed by James Watkins and written by Flanagan, is scheduled for release on October 23, 2026.

Gunn's comments follow the release of Superman, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and Lanterns. DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters has several theatrical films and television projects locked in for the upcoming slate.

Man of Tomorrow, written and directed by Gunn, focuses on an alliance between Superman and Lex Luthor and is scheduled for July 9, 2027. Dynamic Duo, an animated and puppet-hybrid origin story following Dick Grayson and Jason Todd and directed by Arthur Mintz, is scheduled for September 22, 2028.

Other DC projects in development and early planning include The Brave and the Bold, Wonder Woman, Swamp Thing, Savage Hunters, Teen Titans and The Authority.
