James McAvoy Pitched a Young Picard Star Trek Series

McAvoy said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that his one-season pitch about Picard taking over the USS Stargazer did not move forward.

James McAvoy said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he pitched a Star Trek series built around a young Jean-Luc Picard, the character Patrick Stewart played across Star Trek. McAvoy made the comments in an interview on the podcast, which is hosted by Josh Horowitz, according to screenrant.com.

McAvoy described the pitch as a one-off season about Picard taking over as captain of the USS Stargazer and a secret Picard carried for his entire career. He said the idea did not happen because of logistical issues.

The pitch would have cast McAvoy as a younger version of Stewart's character. Stewart originated the role of Picard and returned to it in Star Trek: Picard, a series announced in 2018 whose three-season run ended in 2023.

Weighing the Stargazer era

In Star Trek lore, Picard served as a bridge officer aboard the USS Stargazer years before he became captain of the USS Enterprise-D. He later lost the Stargazer at the Battle of Maxia, was court-martialed and acquitted before being given command of the Enterprise.

McAvoy and Stewart share a separate franchise history: Stewart originated the role of Professor Charles Xavier in Fox's X-Men movies, and McAvoy was later cast as the younger Xavier in 2011's X-Men: First Class. The two Xaviers shared the screen in 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past.
