K2 Pictures, MUFG Detail Japanese Film Financing Push at TIFFCOM
K2 Pictures presented its JPY5 billion K2P Film Fund I at a TIFFCOM panel, while MUFG Bank outlined a government-backed study on film valuation and completion guarantees.
K2 Pictures CEO and producer Kii Muneyuki presented K2P Film Fund I, a new financing vehicle, at a TIFFCOM panel titled “Film Funds in Japan: What Works, What Doesn’t, and What Comes Next,” according to Variety. TIFFCOM is the content market of the Tokyo International Film Festival.
K2P Film Fund I is a blind pool that closed in February at about JPY5 billion (roughly $32 million). It aims to back around 50 films over seven years, and five of its films were released in theaters in 2026. Investors include MUFG, the Development Bank of Japan and other financial institutions and companies.
MUFG Bank managing director Nakagawa Keita presented a feasibility study commissioned by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. MUFG was selected on March 31 to carry out the study, which runs through February 2027. The study will develop valuation and completion-guarantee models using real-world data and test the process from application and review to contract drafting.
The panel also featured Ibe Tomonobu, CEO of Questry, and Motoyanagi Yusuke, a partner at Nishimura & Asahi. It closed with four stated priorities: regulation, capital, creators and cross-border business.
