Kering Women in Motion held a talk event on Tuesday at Toho Cinemas Roppongi Hills as part of the Tokyo International Film Festival, with director Kore-eda Hirokazu delivering the opening remarks. The panel brought together Ninomiya Kazunari, producer Murata Chieko and Amy Homma, director and president of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures and Academy Collection, with journalist Tatsuta Atsuko serving as facilitator, according to Variety.
The conversation covered the present and future of Japanese cinema as well as diversity and inclusion in the industry.
Kore-eda said that in recent years people at international film festivals have described Japanese films as genuinely interesting right now, a remark he said would not have been heard a decade ago. He pointed to directors Hamaguchi Ryusuke and Fukada Koji leading filmmakers in their 20s and 30s in taking their work overseas.
Murata produced the 2025 kabuki-themed drama Kokuho, which became a major hit, drew strong reviews abroad and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
Ninomiya, a member of the group Arashi, first drew international attention for his starring role in Clint Eastwood's Academy Award-winning World War II drama Letters from Iwo Jima.
