Luke Grimes Says John Dutton Return in Marshals Is Unlikely

Luke Grimes told USA Today that a Kevin Costner return to the CBS spinoff Marshals is improbable, and said a Monica flashback would resonate more for Kayce.

Luke Grimes has said a return by Kevin Costner's John Dutton in the CBS spinoff Marshals is improbable at this point. Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton in the series, made the comments in a recent interview with USA Today, according to Screen Rant.

He also said a flashback involving Monica, Kayce's love interest in Yellowstone, would be more poignant for Kayce's character than a flashback involving John, whom Costner played in the original series until the character was killed off before Yellowstone ended.

The CBS series follows Grimes's Kayce Dutton as he moves from ranching to work as a US Marshal, and its first season drew drama from Kayce's troubled relationship with his father, John.

Yellowstone wrapped its run in 2024. As of 2026, Taylor Sheridan is at work on Tulsa King, Landman, The Madison, Lioness and the forthcoming Tulsa King spinoff Frisco King, while the franchise has also produced the prequels 1883 and 1923 and two sequel series, among them Dutton Ranch, which follows Beth and Rip.
