The two actors worked together on Yellowstone, where Costner played John Dutton III and Grimes played Kayce. Costner had a falling out with creator Taylor Sheridan toward the end of the show's run and abruptly exited the series; his character was subsequently killed off.
Asked about the possibility of a flashback in Marshals, Grimes said he would rather a flashback feature Monica than John. He added that there have been no conversations so far about Monica returning.
Yellowstone ended on Paramount Network a year and a half ago. Marshals, which stars Grimes as Kayce, airs on CBS and has been renewed for a second season; its second season opened in CBS's fall 2026 lineup with the rescue of Tate and the re-establishment of its titular team. A separate spinoff, Dutton Ranch, following Beth and Rip in Texas, streams on Paramount+. Costner has yet to reunite with any of his old co-stars after his exit.
