Mahershala Ali Tears Up Over Moonlight at London Film Festival

The actor became emotional recalling the dinner-table scene between young Chiron and Juan during a BFI London Film Festival Screen Talk.

Mahershala Ali became emotional and cried while discussing the dinner-table scene between young Chiron and Juan in Moonlight during a Screen Talk at the BFI London Film Festival, hosted by Amon Warmann, according to Variety.

Ali said the scene drew on a lifelong uncle-like figure who played basketball with him and was later arrested and imprisoned while Ali was in college.

During the talk he also defended Green Book and his work in the film despite the backlash, including the controversy over what Don Shirley's family sanctioned. Ali said he keeps his two Oscar statuettes in a cabinet out of his sight line so he could get back to work.

On the Spider-Verse films, where he voices Aaron Davis, Ali declined to reveal details of his role or whether he had finished recording for Beyond the Spider-Verse. He described the animated-film process, in which actors are filmed in the booth and improvised moments can lead to rewrites and extra recording sessions.

Two of his films screen at the festival: he voices bandit leader Brendan in Wildwood and plays Latif in Your Mother, Your Mother, Your Mother, for which he said he had three or four days to learn the fight choreography. He is now working on the HBO series Task with Mark Ruffalo.

From Green Book to True Detective

Ali said he went from Green Book straight into True Detective with only a week or two off, playing Wayne Hays across three timelines with 80-hour weeks and seven months of shooting. Barry Jenkins's Moonlight, which won Ali one of his two Oscars, recently marked its 10th anniversary.
