MGM+ has greenlit The Black Tapes as an eight-episode supernatural horror mystery series, with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau set to star as psychiatrist Dr. Richard Strand, according to Collider. Production is scheduled to begin in Vancouver in January.

The series follows Dr. Strand and scientist Alex Regan as they investigate the black tapes and uncover an occult conspiracy. The adaptation is based on the podcast The Black Tapes, created by Terry Miles and Paul Bae, who are also writers and executive producers on the show.

Kearie Peak of Peak Pictures and John Rogers and Jennifer Court of Kung Fu Monkey serve as executive producers. MGM Studios is producing.

The original podcast launched in 2015 from Miles and Bae and ran for three seasons, totaling 30 episodes before ending in 2017. It has reached over 60 million downloads since its premiere.

The Black Tapes joins MGM+'s existing genre slate, which includes From. That series premiered on the network in 2022 and stars Harold Perrineau; its fifth season has been announced as its final season and is expected to premiere sometime next year.
