Mia Goth Team Blasts Instagram Over Fake AI Images

Instagram removed the verified account after Goth's spokesperson said the actress has no social media accounts.

An Instagram account posting AI-altered images of Mia Goth was taken down after the actress's team complained to the platform, according to The Verge. The verified account, which had roughly 1 million followers and was labeled a fan account, had posted a fake image of Goth wearing a shirt reading "MY EX IS MY BIGGEST FAN" on Thursday.

The image was picked up by multiple news outlets and circulated as if it were a genuine post from the actress. Goth's spokesperson Christine Tripicchio told The Verge that the image could not be authentic because Goth does not have any social media accounts.

Goth's team filed multiple complaints with Instagram over the account's repeated posting of counterfeit, AI-generated images of the actress. The account appeared to have been taken down as of Tuesday afternoon, per The Verge.

Instagram's parent company, Meta, does not ban AI-generated depictions of real people. Instead, it labels AI-modified content and notes "AI-generated profiles."

Days before the incident, news broke that Goth had filed for divorce from Shia LaBeouf. Elsewhere in Hollywood, figures including Scarlett Johansson, Cate Blanchett and Steven Soderbergh have condemned deepfakes, and Blanchett cofounded the Human Consent Foundation, a nonprofit that helps people register how AI models may scrape their likenesses.
