MIA Market Closes 12th Edition With New Venues and Financing Strand
Rome's MIA Market wrapped its 12th edition after adding an animation gap-financing market and a strand on equity capital, running alongside the Rome Film Festival.
The 12th edition of Rome's MIA Market closed on a Friday, after the industry event expanded beyond Palazzo Barberini and Cinema Barberini to new venues along Via Veneto, according to Variety.
The market added two new elements this year: a gap-financing market for animation series and a strand devoted to financial tools and equity capital in film and TV production. MIA also moved its dates to run alongside the Rome Film Festival and Alice nella Città.
The edition drew industry guests including Banijay Entertainment CEO Marco Bassetti, Studiocanal CEO Anna Marsh, Bad Wolf CEO Jane Tranter, and filmmakers Edward Berger and Asif Kapadia.
The business mood was shaped by consolidation. In the days before MIA opened, Netflix laid off 1,000 employees, about 6% of its workforce, including chief content officer Bela Bajaria and head of film Dan Lin, with Lin's firing announced on the Monday before the opening reception. Paramount Skydance also acquired Warner Bros. Discovery to form Skydance Corp.
CAA's Roeg Sutherland, co-head of media finance and the international film group, said mergers and contraction represent opportunity for financiers. Studiocanal's Anna Marsh said M&As are essential for survival amid industry disruption.
