Mike Flanagan Says The Mist Adaptation Still in Early Development
Speaking at New York Comic Con, the filmmaker says his take on Stephen King's novella will lean into Lovecraftian terror.
Mike Flanagan says his film adaptation of Stephen King's The Mist remains in the pretty early days of development. The filmmaker gave the update at New York Comic Con, according to Screen Rant.
Flanagan said he plans to do something new with the adaptation rather than repeat what has been done before. He added that he wants to lean into the world of Lovecraftian terror King created with the story.
The director also said he aims to play with the nature of the monsters and the claustrophobia of the situation without stepping into Frank Darabont's shadow.
King first published The Mist as a novella in 1980. Frank Darabont's film adaptation followed in 2007 and was a critical and commercial success, while Spike's Mist television series was cancelled after one season.
In February 2026, news came that Flanagan had been tapped to write and direct a new film adaptation of The Mist for Warner Bros.
