Sanderson's Mistborn: Ghostbloods to turn spy thriller, sci-fi

The third Mistborn era moves the fantasy saga toward science fiction and espionage, with the first book estimated around 2028.

Brandon Sanderson's next Mistborn series will be titled Mistborn: Ghostbloods and will push the saga toward science fiction, with a spy-thriller structure, according to movieweb.com. The first book is estimated to arrive around 2028.

The new trilogy is set roughly 50 years after Era 2 and carries a 1980s-inspired backdrop, complete with technology such as computers. Sanderson read the first chapter at World Con 2025, and it teases flying cars.

The author has said he intends to release the first Era 3 book only after all three books are written. That plan dates back to his 2023 State of the Sanderson, in which he set out the same approach.

Sanderson confirmed on a Mistborn 20th anniversary live stream that the new era would be a spy thriller. Era 2 closed with The Lost Metal in 2022, a book that laid groundwork for what comes next.

The series began with Mistborn: The Final Empire in 2006 and ran to The Hero of Ages in 2008; Era 2 opened with The Alloy of Law in 2011 and ended with The Lost Metal in 2022.
