'My Sassy Girl' 4K cut with 13 extra minutes to open in Japan

The Kwak Jae-yong-supervised version adds roughly 13 minutes of never-screened footage and starts at Cinema Art Shinjuku on January 2, 2027.

A 4K complete version of My Sassy Girl, re-edited and supervised by director Kwak Jae-yong, will be screened in theaters for the first time, with a nationwide Japanese release set for January 2, 2027, beginning at Cinema Art Shinjuku and other venues, according to cinematoday.jp.

The new cut includes about 13 minutes of additional scenes that have never been shown in theaters.

The film stars Jun Ji-hyun as the heroine and Cha Tae-hyun as Kyonu, the male lead.

Released in 2001, My Sassy Girl drew about 5 million admissions in South Korea and took more than 500 million yen at the Japanese box office. It set off a "sassy" boom across Asia and was later remade in Hollywood.

Jun Ji-hyun won Best Actress at the 39th Grand Bell Awards for the film, while Cha Tae-hyun took Best New Actor at the 22nd Blue Dragon Film Awards and the 25th Golden Cinematography Awards.
