Neon Acquires Guadagnino's 'Artificial' After Amazon Passes, Sets Christmas Release
Neon picked up Luca Guadagnino's OpenAI drama after Amazon MGM Studios declined to release it, and will open the film in theaters on Christmas Day.
Neon has acquired Luca Guadagnino's film Artificial after Amazon MGM Studios decided not to release it, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The film is set to premiere at the New York Film Festival on Monday night, and Neon will release it in theaters on Christmas Day.
The deal for the film involved Neon paying nothing up front but committing to a $15 million marketing spend. Artificial stars Andrew Garfield as Sam Altman and Yura Borisov as Ilya Sutskever.
Amazon MGM Studios had developed the project with Guadagnino before deciding not to release it. The film was written by Simon Rich and developed at Amazon before Guadagnino was hired to direct, and had a $40 million budget.
After Amazon passed, Neon, Netflix, Searchlight, A24 and Mubi screened the film, with only Neon and Mubi remaining interested. Amazon announced a planned investment of $50 billion in OpenAI months before deciding to sell off Artificial.
