Netflix Posts First Official Grosses as La Bola Negra Opens to $277.5k

The Spanish-language film averaged $69.4k per screen across four theaters in New York and Los Angeles over its three-day debut, according to Netflix's first official gross report.

Netflix has issued its first official box office gross report, and it comes with a four-screen debut for La Bola Negra. The Spanish film took $277.5k across its opening weekend at the Paris Theater and Angelika in New York and AMC Century City and Burbank in Los Angeles, according to Deadline.

The film earned $108.3k on Friday and $84.6k on Saturday, giving it a three-day per-screen average of $69.4k. Netflix said La Bola Negra set house records for a non-English language opening at the Angelika, The Paris and AMC Century City, excluding dubbed anime.

Netflix also said the film holds the second-highest per-screen average ever for a non-English language release and the highest ever for a Spanish film. Exit surveys gave it 96% Excellent or Very Good and 87% Definite Recommend; 66% of the audience was male and 51% was under 35. It sits at 87% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes, where it is Certified Fresh.

The film is being given a 45-day theatrical window. Netflix is expanding it in New York and Los Angeles and adding major markets ahead of a wider break on 11/6.

Directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, La Bola Negra is inspired by an unfinished play by Federico García Lorca. It previously won the TIFF audience award and shared Best Director for its co-directors at its Cannes world premiere, and it is Spain's Oscar entry for Best International Feature.

Netflix released Guitarricadelafuente's single 'La Nieve' from the film on Sept. 18. The musician makes his acting debut in the film, and its New York premiere at NewFest last Thursday was preceded by a poetry salon hosted by John Cameron Mitchell.
