Paul Dini Praises DC Studios' Clayface as Horror Throwback

Batman: The Animated Series writer Paul Dini compared James Watkins' Clayface film to The Fly and Universal's original Wolfman after attending its premiere.

Paul Dini, a writer on Batman: The Animated Series, shared his thoughts on social media after attending the premiere of DC Studios' live-action Clayface film, comparing director James Watkins' movie to horror classics such as The Fly and Universal's original Wolfman, according to Bleeding Cool.

Dini said he enjoyed the premiere the previous night and described the film as creating its own unique take on Gotham and on one of its most tragic villains.

The film is now in theaters. Tom Rhys Harries plays Matt Hagen, the incarnation of Clayface at the center of the story. The cast also includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan.

Dini's History With Clayface

Dini was the first to adapt Clayface for the screen, in the 1992 two-part Batman: The Animated Series episode 'Feat of Clay.' In that series, Matt Hagen was disfigured and given Renuyu, an addictive beauty cream, by Roland Daggett, before being doused with the product and turned into Clayface. In the episode 'Mudslide,' Hagen's body became unstable and he dissolved in the ocean.

Clayface was created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, with several incarnations in DC Comics including Basil Karlo, Preston Payne, Sondra Fuller, Cassius 'Clay' Payne, Peter 'Clay-Thing' Malley, 'Todd Russell' and Johnny Williams.
