The documentary Pete Townshend: Behind Blue Eyes held its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, according to Deadline. The film is directed by Frank Marshall and Nigel Sinclair.

The documentary is also screening at the Hamptons and Mill Valley film festivals.

The film centers on the life and career of Pete Townshend, guitarist and principal songwriter of The Who. In the mid-1960s, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who led the British invasion of American and world culture.

Townshend studied at Ealing Art College as a teenager, where he was influenced by teacher Roy Ascott's theories of technology and consciousness. An exercise at Ealing in auto-destruction, in which students smashed instruments, led to his signature move of destroying his guitar at the end of Who performances.

The Who's assets were placed in frozen storage in the 1980s. Townshend was born in West London in May 1945, just days before Germany's surrender, to a professional saxophonist father and a singer mother. As a small boy, he was sent to live with his maternal grandmother, whom he later described as clinically insane.
