Priit Pärn Unveils First-Ever PÖFF Visual Identity for 30th Edition

The Estonian animator presented the anniversary poster, featuring the Kilplased folk characters making a film, on his 80th birthday.

Estonian animator and cartoonist Priit Pärn has unveiled the first visual identity in the history of the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF), created for the event's 30th edition. Pärn presented the design on his 80th birthday, according to hollywoodreporter.com.

The anniversary poster shows the Kilplased, the foolish folk of Estonian folklore, making a film. The characters will also appear in advertisements, decorations and other visual elements of the 30th edition, which runs Nov. 6-22.

Creative agency AD Angels won the competition for the festival's anniversary visual style and approached Pärn to create the poster. Pärn's wife and fellow animator, Olga, helped create the poster as a technical expert.

A long association with the Kilplased

Pärn has depicted the Kilplased since 1974, when he was one of the artists on Rein Raamat's animated film The Kilplased. He went on to publish the comic books The Kilplased and The Kilplased Go Global and illustrated Eno Raud's book The Kilplased.

According to the article, the Estonian Kilplased originate from the German town of Schilda and its Schildbürger.
